Our History

Shanahan Transportation Systems, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Robert E. Shanahan (1932-2016). Mr. Shanahan worked in the transportation and logistics industry since he graduated high school in 1950, working for the Katy Railroad. Bob then served our country in the U.S. Army logistics core during the Korean War. Following his return home, he started working for Western Freight Consolidators, and then Cooper-Jarrett Freightways as a sales representative and Terminal Manager, then with Quinn Freight Lines as a sales manager. Bob joined a local brokerage firm in 1980, and in 1989 he founded Shanahan Transportation Systems, Inc. with his son Tom.

Since then, we have held firm to our commitment to our customers and carrier partners to build long term relationships – some are still going strong today. We never forget that our company is built on service to our customers. Today we boast one the most experienced sales and operational personnel in the industry. Our people are what set us apart, former traffic managers, directors, and operations staff with more than 100 years combined experience in the logistics industry.

In 2007, we became the founding agent for 1st Priority Services (later re-branded DLS Worldwide), a subsidiary of RR Donnelley & Sons, one of the largest printing and creative media companies in the world. DLS was created as an agent network leveraging the massive freight volumes from all RRD companies to benefit smaller customers providing them with leading technology and systems. In November 2020, RR Donnelley sold DLS to TFI International, making us TForce Worldwide now rebranded to be TFWW.  Today, TFWW has more than 110 agents across North America with revenues in excess of $600M!

With customers based here in Pittsburgh, and around the globe, in industries ranging from printing and manufacturing, to chemicals metal alloys and food products, Shanahan Transportation Systems has the experience and solutions to meet most any need.
